The Office of the State Fire Marshal employs skilled and dedicated law enforcement officers titled Deputy Fire Marshals. The State Fire Marshal utilizes law enforcement–certified police officers by the Council on Police Training (COPT) making them police officers AND firefighters. The deputy fire marshal in Delaware is one of the very few occupations that are cross-trained in two disciplines: law enforcement and firefighting. Lastly, the deputy fire marshal is trained and certified in C.P.R. and carry semi-automatic defibulators to respond to the aid of persons in need. The State Fire Marshal's Office also provides the lead role in fire and arson investigations, statewide.
Deputy Fire Marshals protect the public and promote life safety. Their responsibilities include conducting fire and post-blast investigations to determine origin and cause, identifying incendiary fires and explosions, and investigating arson-related incidents. They work to detect and prevent acts of terrorism, pursue and apprehend individuals who violate arson and explosives laws, and investigate fatal fire and explosion incidents.
Deputy Fire Marshals also assist the Department of Justice in prosecuting arson and explosives-related offenses. In addition, they identify accidental fire causes to support proactive prevention strategies aimed at reducing future incidents and enhancing community safety.
