Eligibility Requirements
Deputy Fire Marshal I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
- Possession of an Associates' degree or higher in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Investigation, Criminal Justice or related field.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
OR
- At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
- Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of conducting investigations which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
- Knowledge of interpreting national and local building and fire codes.
- Knowledge of reviewing and approving site plans, building plans, fire protection system plans and mechanical plans.
- Knowledge of narrative report writing.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
The deputy fire marshal I applicant must pass a physical, medical, vision, and psychological examination to be eligible to attend the Delaware State Police Academy. Successful completion of the DSP Training Academy entails a 22 week residential program in Dover Delaware to obtain the Council on Police Training certificate. Recruits live at the Academy Monday - Friday. An extensive criminal background investigation is conducted on the applicant.
